The Karaoke Underground is for punk and indie rock fans who love to scream, yelp, croon, bark and sometimes even sing their favorites from artists like Bikini Kill, Black Flag, Modest Mouse, the Misfits, Cat Power, the Pixies, Dead Kennedys, Sleater-Kinney, Pavement, Joy Division, Fugazi, Guided By Voices, Rilo Kiley and many more. It’s video karaoke with onscreen lyrics, a stage, you — and the chance to sing great songs you just can’t find anywhere else.
With an ever-expanding catalog of punk and indie classics, we’ve got your poison. From Wilco to Wire, from Belle & Sebastian to Big Black, you’re sure to find something to put a microphone in your hand. Don’t see your favorite? Request a song!
The Village Voice interviewed us in May 2011, check it out! More interviews – including 2014 pieces in Buzzfeed, Noisey/Vice and Consequence Of Sound – at the Media page.
We have shows about once every month around our hometown of Austin, TX. We love to travel, so talk to us about playing a show in your town, including for a fundraiser, house party or wedding. Bring your friends, and sing it loud!!
Hannah and Kaleb have hosted KU since 2004, and we’ve been busy with other music projects too! Kaleb currently plays guitar in surf-punk band The Spoils and bass in instrumental trio Math Patrol, and used to play bass in Stereolab cover band The Groop. Hannah was in The Missyfits, a feminist Misfits cover band that puts the horror punk lyrics to ’60s girl group arrangements. We also played together in the electro-rock band You Make Engine from 2005-2011. We’ve also recorded tons of cover songs for the PRF Monthly Tribute Series.
